DEAR ZACHARY a letter to a son from his father (a review)

DEAR ZACHARY
a letter to a son from his father

2008 American documentary film

conceived and created by Kurt Kuenne

Kuenne's close friend Andrew Bagby was murdered by Shirley Jane Turner after he ended their tumultuous relationship. Shortly after she was arrested, she announced she was pregnant with Bagby's child, a boy she named Zachary. Kuenne decided to interview numerous relatives, friends, and associates of the dead man and incorporate their loving remembrances into a film that would serve as a cinematic scrapbook for the son who never knew him.

The film premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival and was shown at Cinequest Film Festival, South by Southwest, the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, the Sarasota Film Festival, the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival, the Calgary International Film Festival, and the Edmonton International Film Festival, among others, before going into limited theatrical release in the United States, opening in one city at a time in select metropolitan areas. It was broadcast by MSNBC on December 7, 2008 and has been repeated several times since.

Kuenne is donating all profits from the film to a scholarship established in the names of Andrew and Zachary Bagby.

PLOT

Kuenne and Bagby are childhood friends, and when aspiring filmmaker Kuenne begins making home movies, Bagby frequently appears in them and, as they became more professional in quality in later years, invests in them as well. Bagby is a 28-year-old medical student when he meets Shirley Jane Turner, a twice-divorced Canadian American general practitioner who is thirteen years his senior. Bagby's parents, friends, and associates are wary of the relationship, but initially Turner seems to keep Bagby grounded and relatively free of stress as he pursues his career.

Eventually, the relationship crumbles and Bagby ends it. Turner relocates to the Midwestern United States but apparently is consumed with anger strong enough to prompt her to drive 1,600 miles overnight to Latrobe, Pennsylvania, where she shoots Bagby numerous times in the parking lot of a local park on November 5, 2001 before returning home.

Bagby's family and friends immediately urge police to investigate Turner, and after a lengthy investigation in which extensive evidence is accumulated, she is arrested. When she is released on bail, she flees to St. John's, Newfoundland to avoid prosecution. Soon after she discovers she is pregnant. Thus begins a long legal battle waged by Bagby's parents David and Kathleen, who move from Sunnyvale, California to Canada, determined to gain custody of their grandson and Turner's rendition for a Pennsylvania trial while she fights extradition to the United States in the Canadian courts while free on bail.

Turner eventually is returned to prison, only to be released again by Justice Gayle Welsh, who feels she has exhibited no behavior that suggests she poses a threat to society. Turner thus regains custody of Zachary. On August 18, 2003, Turner, carrying the infant Zachary, jumps into the Atlantic Ocean from a fishing wharf in Foxtrap; both perish.[2]

No longer just a legacy for Zachary, Kuenne's film also becomes a polemical rant against the Canadian justice system for catering to a dangerous sociopath and failing to recognize how dangerous she is.

CRITICAL RECEPTION

Peter Debruge of the Variety called the film "a virtuoso feat in editing" and noted, "The way Kuenne presents the material, with an aggressive style that lingers less than a second on most shots, it's impossible not to feel emotionally exhausted." [3]

Martin Tsai of the New York Sun said the film "has so many unexpected developments that it plays like a first-rate thriller . . . and the film is so unsettling that it will stay with viewers for a long time. Like . . . The Thin Blue Line, Dear Zachary borrows some narrative dramatic tricks, and they pay off remarkably well. It's hands down one of the most mind-blowing true-crime movies in recent memory, fiction or nonfiction." [4]

The National Board of Review of Motion Pictures named the film one of the five top documentaries of the year. Among those who named it one of the best films of 2008 were Time Out Chicago, The Oregonian, the Times Herald-Record, Slant Magazine, and WGN Radio Chicago.

AWARDS AND NOMINATIONS

The Chicago Film Critics Association nominated the film Best Documentary. The Society of Professional Journalists presented it with its Sigma Delta Chi Award for Best Documentary, it received the Special Jury and Audience Awards at the Cinequest Film Festival, it was named an Audience Favorite at Hot Docs, it received the Audience Awards at the St. Louis International Film Festival and the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival, and it was named Best Documentaty at the Orlando Film Festival. [5]

SYNOPSIS
Shortly after his best friend, Dr. Andrew Bagby, was slain by jealous ex-girlfriend Dr. Shirley Turner, filmmaker Kurt Kuenne was shocked to learn that Turner was pregnant with Bagby's unborn child. Hoping to create a film that would serve as both a memorial to Bagby and an introduction to the father the boy would never know, Kuenne quickly began production on a film celebrating the life of his late friend. Traveling across the entire continental United States, Kuenne made it his personal mission to interview everyone who had ever known his best friend so their memories would be captured on camera before they faded. Meanwhile, upon learning that Turner had fled to Newfoundland, Bagby's devastated parents uprooted their entire lives and relocated to the easternmost providence of Canada in order to fight for the future of their newborn grandson, Zachary. During the production, however, the Canadian government freed Turner on bail as she awaited extradition to the United States. Unfortunately, during that crucial time, the situation took a turn for the worse -- a turn that could have been prevented had the Canadian justice system heeded all the warning signs.

....

Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father is an astonishing and a dismaying documentary by writer/director Kurt Kuenne. The astonishment comes in the tragic events of 28-year-old Andrew Bagby's life and death, including such bizarre twists and turns that were it not all true, audiences would dismiss the story as straining all credulity. However, Bagby's murder by his one-time, 40-year-old girlfriend Shirley Turner is just the beginning of the story. When Andrew's best childhood friend, filmmaker Kuenne, decides to make a video memorial for Andrew, he finds more than can be unemotionally accepted.

For Kurt learns that Shirley was pregnant with Andrew's son Zachary when she shot Andrew. And that's the first chapter. The dismaying part follows as the Canadian judicial system repeatedly fails to mete out justice. I won't reveal additional details of this aspect of Dear Zachary, but it is shocking and catastrophic, especially given our attitudes toward Canadian common sense. As the investigation of Andrew's murder and its aftermath proceeds, Andrew's parents, David and Kathleen, become thoroughly involved as Zachary's touchingly loving grandparents, moving from California to Newfoundland to take care of Zachary as much as allowed by Shirley. Through many interviews with them, Kurt documents their trying days and months. David Bagby, Andrew's father, wrote a popular book about his experiences called Dance with the Devil.

As that title suggests, there's no pretense to objectivity in Dear Zachary, nor does it seem warranted given the circumstances. In his guiding narration, Kurt clearly says he intends for this movie to bring Andrew to life for Zachary. To successfully accomplish this, Kurt goes back to the many movies he and Andrew shot as kids and edits them into a tender tribute. He adds snippets from interviews with many of Andrew's friends-when and how they heard the news, what they remember about him, their reaction to the ongoing tragedy. The kaleidoscope of impressions and memories add up to a three-dimensional portrait of this budding doctor committed to his family-practice residency in small Latrobe, Pennsylvania. As the picture of who Andrew was and of what happened comes into focus, it's impossible not to be swept up in Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father and to be in tears and outraged by the end.

so for now I think that this is enough for my contribution about the story of Mr. ANDREW BAGBY and his son ZACHARY ANDREW TURNER.
I may not be that good in writing things but at least I tried hard to express their thought
in my own simple way and that
my sympathy are with them.

For Andrew and Zachary I will pray hard for the both you and tell your story to my
other friends and family.

For KATE and DAVID who devoted their lives for the two
man that they love dearly
I will pray for both of you also and I hope that you will continue your good deeds
to other people and fight for your advocacy in life.

You two are very great people...
one in a million ...

and for those people who are in powers please do your job properly
and don't just waste the lives of good people.

Space Sheriff Shaider

Hiroshi Tsuburaya ( 1964-2001 )

when I was looking around the you tube I remembered what I had been watched a month
ago in television about the evolution of the costumes of Shaider but as I surf from it
I found the first episode of it so I tried to put it here for you to watch.

Uchū Keiji Shaider (宇宙刑事シャイダー, Uchū Keiji Shaidā?), translated into English as Space Sheriff Shaider, is the third part of the Metal Hero Series, the last of the Space Sheriff Trilogy. It aired on TV Asahi from March 2, 1984 to March 1, 1985. Its action footage was used for the rest of Season 2 of VR Troopers.

PLOT

In college, Dai Sawamura deciphered the figures on the Nazca Plain in Peru. Impressed by this feat, the Galactic Union Police recruited the archaeologist and trained him to be Earth's third Space Sheriff, after which he was given the code name 'Shaider' in memory of an ancient warrior who defeated the villain Emperor Kubilai and brought down the Fuuma Empire 12,000 years ago. The empire, upon knowing the appointment of Dai as the new Shaider, plots to annihilate him in order to conquer Earth once again.

CHARACTERS

WEAPONS AND ARSENAL

* Vavilos: The giant spaceship headquarters of Shaider and Annie. The base of their operation strategies as it circles around the Earth. It can fire the Vavilos Beam from its wings. Whenever Shaider enters the Strange Realm and encounters a giant Fuuma gunship, he summons Vavilos, commanding it to transform either into a giant gun called the Big Magnum or a giant robot whose chest emits a giant laser beam called Vavilos Fire, fires Vavilos Lasers from its hands, and can shoot Vavilos Missiles.

* Shaian: A tank that holds both the Sky Shaian and the Battle Shaian together at the same time.

* Sky Shaian: it is a fighter jet either driven by Shaider or Annie to attack and to destroy carriage-like Fuuma jet fighters. It blasts Shaian Beams to destroy the Fumma jet fighters. Also known as the Sky Striker.

* Battle Shaian: Also known as the Battle Tank, it is a giant drill tank that drills underground. It contains Shaian Rockets (Battle Tank Rockets) to attack enemy arsenals on ground, underground (rescuing people enslaved by Fuuma in the process). It is also equipped with a Shaian Searcher.

* Blue Hawk: A Suzuki motorcycle that serves as Shaider's vehicle to enter the "Strange Realm" in order to chase the Fuuma's Strange Beast. Capable of shooting Hawk Lasers and Hawk Missiles.

* Suzuki SJ: A stock mini-SUV from Suzuki with Jimny livery and spare tire cover design, which Dai uses to patrol in plain clothes. Essentially the same vehicle used in Uchuu Keiji Gavan, only colored blue.

* Savanna RX-7: a yellow sports car from Mazda which Annie uses to patrol in plain clothes.

* Laser Blade (Shaider Cutter): Shaider's sword, drawn like a metal tape measure from his waist. It sometimes assume a ribbon-like flexibility to hold Strange monster in battle. Required to execute his ultimate blow, the Shaider Blue Flash.

* Laser Shot: Annie's side arm, similar to Shaider's Video Beam Gun.

* Video Beam Gun:: Shaider's side weapon. It has a video screen to see Strange monsters that turn invisible, and can be used while using the Shaider Scope.

ATTACKS AND SKILLS

* Shaider Punch: Shaider can punch straight to the enemy in mid-air.
* Shaider Kick: Shaider spins in mid-air while doing a kick.
* Blue Flash Spark: Shaider can transform himself into a blue ball of light.
* Shaider Full Power: A strong punch that was only used in episode 46.

STRANGE WORLD FUUMA

Stange World Fuuma (不思議界フーマ, Fushigikai Fūma?) is a religion based from the Strange Palace in the Strange World dimension revering Kubilai as its god which intends to conquer the universe through psychological attacks. Kubilai attempted to take over Earth 12,000 years ago, only to be stopped by the warrior Shaider and was defeated again by the modern Shaider.

* Great Emperor Kubilai: The ruler of Fuuma and the former ruler of the Mu Empire. He is portrayed as a giant, golden head with three red eyes embedded in the wall of the Fuuma Palace. Later revealed to have had a body once, having tentacled limbs with serpent-like heads on the ends, but he was separated from his body by the warrior Shaider, when the latter cut his head off 12,000 years ago, and sealed his body in a cave.

* Shinkan Poe (神官ポー): Kubilai's transvestite grandson in white who serves as advisor and strategist. He is attired in elegant white robes, and a horned, immensely large oval shaped headdress. Wields a scepter called the "Sky Cutter". As a high priest, Poe presides over the Strange Beast birth and Strange Dimension Generation ceremonies. Drinking an elixir made somehow from young girls every 500 years, he lived 15,000 years. Unwilling to have anyone be more beautiful than he, his true face is mummified. He met his end during the series finale (Episode 48) after Kubilai was destroyed. Since his grandfather was no longer alive to give him the energy he needed to stay young, he repented to Annie and Shaider before fading away into nothingness alongside the lower ranked Fuuma monsters that were on the Palace. In battle, Poe could toss his scepter as well as blast Shaider with blue lasers from the scepter's core. Poe possesses teleportation and telekinetic abilities that he demonstrated on Shaider, before Shaider broke free from Poe's control.

* Hessler: A field operative. Hessler oversees the attacks on Earth. He is a proud, yet easily irritated warrior who argues with his younger brother Himley, who once tried to take his position. Hessler met his end, near the end of the series (Episode 45), when he was destroyed by Shaider in battle.

* Himley (episode 28): Hessler's brother. He is dressed in an armor that seems to be spider-themed and wields two swords, and a trident, in battle. He and Hessler went into battle against Shaider together. Himley could blast lasers from the spider's eyes embedded in his head gear and seemed to be a great fencer. Himley could also blast webbing-shaped lightning bolts, in battle. He was destroyed by a fatal sneak attack inflicted by Hessler, after he had betrayed Hessler by trying to usurp his position. Kubilai promised to give Himley Hessler's job and position if he destroyed Shaider. After the offer, Himley eagerly agreed and looked forward to taking Hessler's place. Himley carried with him a venomous spider, which he used in his scheme against Shaider and the Earth.

* Girl's Army: A team of five deadly, kunoichi trained in the most vicious and dangerous arts of combat. They had no individual names, but the production notes listed them as: Girl 1 (black), Girl 2 (purple), Girl 3 (red), Girl 4 (green), and Girl 5 (pink). They are commanded by Hessler. First Girl 1, who claimed to be the leader of the five, was destroyed (Episode 44), and then Girl 3 followed (Episode 45). At the end of the series, Kubilai ate the three remaining girls to give him energy to battle Shaider.

* Miraclers: Grunts with big round eyes and fanged mouths. They act either as foot soldiers or as pilots for the carriage-shaped aircraft. Destroyed at the end of the series when the fortress crumbled apart and exploded. Shaider occasionally pummels them before going on to fight the Strange Beasts.

OTHER VILLAINS

Omega (Movie 1): An alien assassin who has been hunting all the Space Sheriffs. He previously went after Gavan and later Sharivan but failed. In the movie, Shaider was Omega's new prey and the one who destroyed Him. Armed with twin shoulder cannons.

STRANGE DIMENSION

The Strange Dimension is an alternate universe with various traps and other dimensions. Some of the traps used in this realm are designed to match the monster's theme. Also seen are grunts and minions that assist the monster against Shaider. The temperature in this dimension reaches about 6,000 degrees Celsius. The primary purpose of this dimension is to enhance a Strange monster's powers and abilities by about 4 times, in an attempt to give it the upper hand against Shaider. When Kubilai calls for the Strange dimension, Poe will summon it to draw the beast inside, thereby luring Shaider to follow it into Fuuma territory. Besides the monster and the various traps within the Strange dimension, a constant threat Shaider faces inside is a Fuuma gunship; for this reason, he calls on his battle fortress Vavilos, using either its giant blaster or robot form to destroy the gunship.

Despite an upgrade in its fighting strength, a Strange Beast can still be destroyed by Shaider while inside the Strange Realm. This, in turn, will dissolve the warp until the next time it is summoned again.

MOMMY

MOMMY....

hmm... how will i start this blog???
hindi ko mahanap yung words to express myself sa topic na etoh.. i'm so very happy and greatful that He let me have this very wonderful daughter...

hindi ko ma-explain kung gaano ko kasaya noong nagkaanak ako...
i'm HAPPY to the maximum level...

at first semester of my pregnancy honestly speaking hindi pumasok sa isip ko na ipalaglag ang baby ko. never pumasok talaga yun sa isip ko kasi i really do love kids...

having a baby in a very young age i must say na mahirap po talaga...there are things na bago lang sayo and sometimes no i mean always ang hirap maka jive sa mga things na yun ng pagbubuntis...

minsan kapag naaalala ko yung noon nasasabi ko sa sarili ko i made a wrong decision sa buhay ko kasi i got pregnant in a very young age, i got stop in school but now in my opinion tama din yun kasi hindi man ako natapos i know sa sarili ko na i become a better person because of her.(endi sa pagyayabang but yun talaga)

nagkaroon ako ng eagerness to survive kahit na sa pinaka basta pinaka asar na part ng life ko..

nagkaroon ako ng directions sa buhay because now i'm thinking na kaylangan ko na siyang alagaan ng mag-isa lang...my daughter changes me and kahit ngayon binabago niya pa rin ako without knowing it...

noong buntis ako sa kanya ang sama ko kasi up to 6 months tinago ko siya..it's not because nahihiya ako it's more on na wala akong lakas ng loob to say that things...
minsan kasi sa buhay ng tao may nararamdaman kang panghihina ng loob..
or maybe it's the feeling of na failed mo ung magulang mo..

then nung first ultra sound ko naiyak ako kasi totoong may buhay nga sa stomach ko ang saya kasi i could bring life talaga pala...

and then noong lumabas yung umi koh unang hawak ko sa kanya grabe ang saya...
she is so small so fragile katakot talaga... she's only 4.5 pounds by then....

pasaway na bata man siya pero when i said something sinusunod niya ako agad pero may kasama yung BAKIT lage..

madami siyang tanong sa life...

everytime that we are together nararamdaman ko na i'm completed na and contented with how my life goes on..

being a Mommy to umi koh is not an easy task i must say but it makes me more stronger to face the world...she gives colors to my dull life and makes me feel that i'm important kasi nga Mommy niya ako...

hindi ko kinakahiya na may anak na ko as long as i know to myself na hindi ko pinapabayaan ang umi koh... being a single mom is hard and madame silang tanong (ung mga tao sa earth) about it so what if i had a failed relationship sa past ang mahalaga lang sa akin ngayon is my daughter..

i love you umi koh(so much sobra sobra lageh lageh)

i will do my very best to be a super mommy to you hahaha

seryosong blog etoh..

Touching life story.....

A young man was getting ready to graduate college. For
many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer's
showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told
him that was all he wanted.

As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited
signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the
morning of his graduation his father called him into his private
study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine
son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son
a beautiful wrapped gift box.

Curious, but somewhat disappointed the young man
opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible. Angrily,
he raised his voice at his father and said, "With all your money you
give me a Bible?" and stormed out of the house, leaving the holy
book.

Many years passed and the young man was very successful in
business.
He had a beautiful home and wonderful family, but realized his
father was very old, and thought perhaps he should go to him. He
had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make
arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had
passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He
needed to come home immediately and take care things.
When he arrived at his father's house, sudden sadness and
regret filled his heart.

He began to search his father's important papers and
saw the still new Bible, just as he had left it years ago. With
tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. As he
read those words, a car key dropped from an envelope
taped behind the Bible.
It had a tag with the dealer's name, the same dealer who had the
sports car he had desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation,
and the words...PAID IN FULL.

How many times do we miss God's blessings because they are not
packaged as we expected?

LIFE IS A THEATER Invite Your Audience Carefully

Not everyone is healthy enough to have a front row seat in our lives.
There are some people in your life that need to be loved from a DISTANCE.
It's amazing what you can accomplish when you let go of, or at least
minimize your time with, draining, negative, incompatible,
not-going-anywhere relationships/friendships.
Observe the relationships around you. Pay attention.
Which ones lift and which ones lean?
Which ones encourage and which ones discourage?
Which ones are on a path of growth uphill and which ones are going downhill?
When you leave certain people do you feel better or feel worse?
Which ones always have drama or don't really understand, know or appreciate
you?
The more you seek quality, respect, growth, peace of mind, love and truth
around you...the easier it will become for you to decide who gets to sit in
the front row and who should be moved to the balcony of Your Life.
"If you cannot change the people around you, CHANGE the people you are
around."
Remember that the people we hang with will have an impact on both our lives
and our income. And so we must be careful to choose the people we hang out
with, as well as the information with which we feed our minds.
We should not share our dreams with negative people, Nor feed our dreams
with negative thoughts.
It's your choice and your life..... It's up to you who and what you let in
it......
